i am a uber driver , buying a car was my biggest mistake . if i can make 50 dollar per hour while driving, why would i work only 30 hours ? this is bullshit ! keep in mind uber comission is 30%,tax sale is 8% and black car fund is 1.5% so if passenger paid 40$ then uber get 12$ ,tax is 3.2 $ and car fund is 0.8$ so driver get 24 $ .so out of 40 $ driver get 24 $ and you still need to pay income tax !

Trying to follow the math.  So do you make $24 an hour?  Is that what it comes down to?

I heard from a friend Uber driver this interesting tidbit.  Drivers definitely lose money on certain rides, and a good portion of all the rides end up losing them money.  You just have to make up for those loses by making sure to have good rides, that are longer and maybe under surge.

...and this is why the seasoned drivers who can cherry pick (or at least know when, where, and how to work) can make good profits but others don't.

I rented a car for the first 2 months of 2017 then financed one which was the biggest mistake, I made for the whole 2017 gross income of 94K and net profit of 38K after the expenses and depreciation and I have to pay taxes 5K, BTW I worked full time 6 days a week 9-11 hours per day. I believe Uber pay to market those kind of articles to push more drivers in the street

Yep, that's part for the course. I argue this article strongly.

Don't remind me of how little I make.  I used to do the math, but I intentionally ignore. Unhealthy? I gotta get up in the morning first

You all people are so damn naive...No body and this mean no body make more than $20~$25 an hour net driving in the NYC....by putting 9plus hour on daily basis for 6 days.....With all the stupid expenses no body goes home by putting $10  AN HOUR in their pocket.....Stop arguing and except the reality.....UBER office in LongIsland city is not more than a ghost town lately.....and let’s guess what is the reason?

Woah! I would never expect an Uber driver to make that much. Pretty good for making your own schedule and working whenever you want to! I might quit my day job.

Either this person who put this info here is either mad or stupid dumb, please leave ur job and come drive for these taxi and fhv companies, you might be making 100 an hour, I hope u don't commit suicide  in ur first month of driving as a fhv driver. Hats off to all these drivers that bust their asses working long long hours  and making not even close to minimum wages, just to take care of their family. You ask why the still do it ? They stuck with the car or SUV and and the expenses that came with doing this job, we are screwed, one way or another.

Oh please I'm getting tired of this nonsense .Ride sharing apps SUCK because the majority of the passengers do not tip which is why ride sharing apps SUCK. Drivers committing suicide in one of the most expensive cities in the world and our taxi rates is equilent to third world countries. Thirty plus years in this business and never imagined that drivers would take their lives because they were overwhelmed  by filthy politicians and investors The quality of passengers in ride sharing apps is DISGRACEFUL and change is needed. When the rates rise as the NY minimum wage goes to $15  per hour hopefully  the quality of passengers will also rise. with the new rates and surcharges.

Not a single person is clarifying whether this is talking about a professional TLC licensed Uber driver, or the rogue UBERX driver. Alot of these articles out and the questions that ask how much can an uber driver make are asked by Joe schmo sitting on his couch wondering if he can make money driving in his spare time.

UberX drivers make alot less than TLC uber drivers, but the expenses are ALOT more.

I drive for uber x (no TLC license) in Westchester county new york. Before taxes we think we are making ok money averaging $16 an hour. But then at the end of the year taxes hit and we owe the gov't $3000 we are screwed. So I went back through my accounting and re-averaged it to $8 an hour. (And I put 80,000 miles on my Cadillac srx.

    So not worth it!

You're spreading misinformation about how much Uber drivers make in NYC and if people sign up they're going to be disappointed. Working 30 hours a week during peak hours (7am-9am, 5pm-7pm) you make anywhere from $600-$800 at most. Extra hours in and you could make up to $1,200 working 45 or more hours. Anything over $1,000 has only happened a few times full-time in the past 7 months. Also, your TLC INSURANCE. $320-$400 a month and collision is an extra $300+ a month. The TLC insurance also expects money up front for the end of the year. Uber's office didn't once bring up how expensive the insurance is and I was already invested too much in Uber NYC to back out.

This is the only job where your pay goes down. In 1988 I was making $1000 per week driving a yellow cab in a taxi garage. That was working 6 days a week with a maximum of 60 hours garage to garage.

I've been driving in NYC since April 2017 on full time basis started with renting for a few months which was a killer then bought a car and it made a world of difference. my initial investment was $5000 for the car and my monthly expenses are 250 for car, 400 insurance, 450 for gas and around 200 a month for EZ pass plus maintenence if needed. To me its a business not just a job, so I set daily, weekly and monthly goals and with that in mind I manage to gross $6000 a month and net a little under $5k after expenses, and income tax to follow later.

I have met and seen guys who gross 2000/week doing just Uber and nothing else which is amazing and I've only managed to do that on my first month, after the first month, its a hustle but can be done if you have the energy to chase it... btw i'm in my 40's and 2 kids... time is of the essence.

I believe this 2k per week because I did it the week of Christmas there were so many people in NYC. Now I’m January I have to hustle harder because rides have gone down. I just started an am renting which is a pain in the ass because if I owned I would pay half but now I have to wait to get in the door because of new legislation that was passed back in August. I believe it’s possible to make 2k per week BUT only with some luck. I did it my third week on the job but I assure you I have no clue how I got so lucky because I’m having a hard time making 2k again. I think I got lucky but if I did it then it is possible so it’s only a matter of getting better at the job now. Kudos to everyone

I drive too in NYC and did the same like you, just file your taxes and see how much you're going to pay

plus the car expenses will start to jump after the first year because the maintainance after the 25000 miles

          changing tires

for the first year I made gross of 94K net of 38K and I have to 5K in taxes

          good luck
