(I'll probably get skewered for this, but it's worth a discussion!)
While most rideshare drivers are more than fit for the job, it's sometimes the reckless ones that cause issues for everyone else. Wrongful deactivations for drivers are nothing new and LegalRideshare aggressively opposes when drivers are taken off the road unfairly. We hear about it time and time again, and it pains us how a driver with a near-perfect record (for years), can be dropped instantly at a false claim by a passenger.
But there is another side. Some drivers ARE reckless, have been banned and somehow return the same (or worse) then before. In some cases they use fake or shared accounts. But the result is the same: it negatively affects every other rideshare driver on the road. Between dangerous drivers and the over saturation of drivers, what can be done?
While in no way a cure-all for all the issues around rideshare, we believe that driver training can have a seriously positive impact. For one, it educates drivers on how to handle accidents, and second, clearly signals that he or she has what it takes to be on the road in this capacity. Finally, such courses could help re-educate bad drivers and ween out those unwilling to get better. It's a win-win.
As such, we'd like to highlight Accident Liability Institute - an organization that has over 30 years of traffic safety experience and training solutions, with a goal to improve driver safety. I believe that rideshare drivers should definitely consider taking a training course. Such courses can provide essential knowledge and skills to ensure the safety and comfort of passengers. However, finding the right resources for education can be a challenge. Sure, why not. It might be an inconvenience... but it also might help in a lot of ways. Something needs to change. Drivers need to be weeded out or improve. Even if it wastes my time... it will not be a waste if it improves the overall workforce. It gets pretty dangerous at airports with the Fast and The Furious driving and jockeying. Many drivers are aggressive, rude, and just dangerous... Taxis and others too, but you can see the window dressing. (If they have it on the windshield.)
Don't fall into the hype of the word ride share because you are a private taxi driver and for that reason there should be standardized training program. I'm 1986 I went to a one week taxi school in NYC plus a three month probation before I was issue a standard hack license . There is so much to learn and having a foundation of training really helps .
Let's start with tougher background checks instead of blow on the mirror test.
Didn't Lyft used to make drivers do a driving test? Do they still do that? I think this is really important and should be done in every city.
Driving test? 😆 with U/L if your breath shows up on the mirror, you're good to go
They definitely use to have a little test for new drivers like back in 2014 - I remember my drivers talking about it. I wonder when they got rid of it.
